Google responds to privacy policy criticisms

Google is defending its new privacy policy, stressing that the company isn’t collecting more data, just collecting it in a new way.


“We’re making things simpler and we’re trying to be upfront about it. Period,” said Google’s policy manager Betsy Masiello in a blog post Thursday evening.


The company recently announced big changes to its privacy policy, posting notifications throughout its products that read, “We’re changing our privacy policy and terms. Not the usual yada yada,” and, “This stuff matters.”


Where Google was, in essence, a patchwork of products governed by individual privacy policies, it is consolidating itself into one big product suite under one big privacy policy. But, as with any announcement around privacy, users become scared and unsure of where their data is going.


In Google’s case, the data is now being used to “improve” other products. Take Search Plus Your World for example. The company’s flagship product, search, now shows “personal” results from its social network Google+. Personal results include photos, posts, and people’s accounts that are relevant to your search term. Your data is shared between the two different services, and more of this personal integration can occur under the new privacy policy.


“We’re not collecting more data about you. Our new policy simply makes it clear that we use data to refine and improve your experience on Google — whichever products or services you use,” said Masiello. “This is something we have already been doing for a long time.”


Another issue is the inability to “opt-out” of your data being used in different products. If you don’t want your data collected, your only option is simply not use the service in question. A slightly less extreme measure is to use different accounts for different services, so that data is not shared between them. For example, use one Google account for your mail, another for YouTube and one more for Google+. Additionally, there are always the granular privacy changes you can make within some of the products. You can also use the Google products without being logged in, though that limits you to only products that don’t require an account.
“You can use as much or as little of Google as you want,” said Masiello. “You still have choice and control.”

Megaupload To End By Thursday

MegaUpload, a major content sharing website might completely be erased by FBI. MegaUpload was brought down by the US government on different federal crime counts, including copyright infringement, conspiracy to commit money laundering, criminal copyright infringement and some others. Kim Dotcom, the owner of the site was also arrested from his mansion in New Zealand and is still in jail, awaiting trial.

New reports reveal that MegaUpload might completely by erased by Thursday. This means that those people who have been using the website for legitimate purposes which includes backing their business files, will be in great jeopardy. According to the Associated Press, a letter filed past Friday in the whole piracy case of MegaUpload, the United States Attorney Office revealed that Cogent Communications Group and Carpathia Hosting, two companies whichMegaUpload recruited to store data, might start deleting the data from Thursday.

Assets of the company have been seized by the United States government, whereas the respective bank accounts have also been frozen. This meansMegaUpload is not equipped to pay companies such as Cogent and Carpathia for the services they rendered.

Megaupload was taken down by the United States government on the 19th of January, while its workers and associated, which the government could track down, were taken into custody and were charged against crimes linked to online piracy. The MegaUpload case is the biggest cases of online copyright infringement taken on by the United States government.

People across the world used MegaUpload to store their files and get unauthorized copies of television shows, songs, porn, feature films, software and other things. However, some customers used the site for legitimate purposes including sharing large work files and backing up their data related to business and others

Internet Business To double By 2016

Internet based business, in countries part of the G20, will double until 2016, reaching a value of 4,2 trillion dollars, from 2,3 trillion dollars, thanks to the rapid growth of mobile internet connections. According to a study created by Boston Consulting Group, in future four years, 3 billion people will use the Internet, which means 50% of the entire world population.

Currently, the internet access rate is 200 million people / year which access the internet for the first time. Still, traditional access, from a computer, will decrease and the internet access by smartphones will increase thanks to the fact that many smartphones can now be purchased for less than 100 dollars. So, until 2016, it is estimated that 80% of users will access the Internet through a mobile phone.

In 2010, internet business in the G20 countries was evaluated at 2,3 trillion dollars, bigger than the savings of Italy or Brazil, however representing only 4,1% of the total G20 economy.


The Boston Consulting Group talks however about the appearance of a “new internet” in which access will no longer be a luxury and most users will be from emerging markets. For example, in four years, China will have 800 million users, more than the United States, India, France, Germany and U.K. combined.


Also, IBM officials say that until 2015, one trillion devices will be connected to the Internet.

Google, the company who ordered the study will be one of the companies that will take advantage of the massive growth of internet access, however not the only one. According to the study, companies like Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Baidu and Tencent will share the proceeds.

You would think that number would be so high to accommodate Amazon’s recent debut of the Kindle Fire, but the most commonly search for keyword in the retail industry was actually “Zumba dance DVD.” If we learn anything from common keywords it’s that the economy is down, so people are self-employed and want to dance at home for exercise.


Travel and tourism came in third with $2.4 billion spent on Google advertising. Jobs and education came in fourth, and home and garden in fifth.
